Planter and Manager of Rosehill Estate on St. Croix and Precht Estate on St. Thomas. Husband of Mary Elizabeth Van Brakle and father of Samuel R. F. Barnes, Matilda Caroline (Barnes) Fuhrhop, Laura Barnes, Waldemar Barnes, twins Eliza Smith Barnes and James Smith Barnes, Augusta Heyliger Barnes, Isaac Farrington Barnes, William Van Brakle Barnes, and Mary Elizabeth (Barnes) Cowper.

Richard F. and his wife Mary Elizabeth arrived in New Orleans on 2 February 1859 from the isle of St. Thomas along with their children Laura, Waldemar, James S., William V. B., and Mary E. Sadly, Mary Elizabeth died just ten days later, and Richard died about eight months after his wife. Both were buried in Lafayette Cemetery #1.
