Jess was a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division, 187th Regimental Combat Team, and 101st Airborne Division from 1953-1956. His main job in the Army was parachute rigger. He also made jumps testing parachute modifications and did some heavy drop work. He made over 30 parachute jumps.
Jess married Shirley Dean Finn on January 18, 1956. They moved to his farm in Homedale, Idaho where they had two children, and he raised dairy cattle, alfalfa seed, hay, grain, and corn.
