Tennessee Governor, US Congressman. He served as the 47th Governor of Tennessee from January 21, 1995 to January 18, 2003. He also served in the United States House of Representatives from the 7th District of Tennessee from January 3, 1983 to January 3, 1995. He graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois with B.A. in Business Administration in 1957. From 1957 to 1963, he served in the United States Navy, including two years on active duty. He went to work for Jostens in 1961 and stayed with the company until 1972, when he established his own advertising and printing firm, Graphic Sales of America in Memphis, Tennessee. After moving to Tennessee in 1962, he became active in local Republican politics. In 1982, he decided to run, as a Republican, for a seat in the United States House of Representatives and was successful in the November general election. He went on to serve six terms in the House before stepping down in 1994 to make a run for the Tennessee governorship that year. During his House tenure, he had a conservative voting record. He was successful in becoming the governor of Tennessee in the 1994 gubernatorial general election and went on to serve in this position for eight years before stepping down in 2003. After leaving office, he continued to be active on the political scene in the state and also became a lobbyist.
