John Altmeyer was born on March 31, 1890 or 1891, in Huntingburg, Indiana. He was the son of Joseph and Amanda James Altmeyer (later Burdett). John was their only child.

Joseph Altmeyer died on January 21, 1900.

In the 1900 Federal census, Manda Altmeyer was listed as a widow, living in Patoka township, Dubois County, Indiana. John Altmeyer, age 9, was her only son and living with them was Hanna Flames, the sister of Amanda Altmeyer.

On January 22, 1906, Amanda Altmeyer and Jonathan Emery "Roxy or Roxie" Burdett were married in Marion County, Indiana.

Roxy Burdette, age 44; Mandy Burdette, age 39; John R. Burdette (actually Altmeyer) age 20, were living in Indianapolis, Indiana, along with several lodgers in the 1910 Federal censu. Roxy Burdette was a police officer and John Altmeyer was a machine hand in the steel industry.

John Altmeyer and Hazel Maude Smith were married on August 14, 1911, in Marion County, Indiana.

On August 15, 1911, Amanda Tames Altmeyer Burdette died and was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery on August 17, 1911.

In the 1920 Federal census, John Altmeyer, age 30, was working on his own farm. His wife Hazel Altmeyer, age 23, listed no occupation. They were living with their children in Van Buren, Monroe County, Indiana. Children were: Clarence Altmeyer, age 7; Edith Altmeyer, age 6; William Altmeyer, age 2; and Martha Altmeyer, age eleven months.

Hazel Maude Smith Altmeyer died on July 25, 1928, in Indianapolis.

The family was living in Indianapolis, according to the 1930 Federal census. John Altmeyer, age 39, was working as a machinist in an auto plant. He was listed as widowed and had the following children living with him: Clarence Altmeyer, age 17; Edit Altmeyer, age 16; William Altmeyer, age 12; Martha Altmeyer, age 11; John Altmeyer, age 9; Anna Altmeyer age 6; and Juanita, age 2.

John Altmeyer and Freida Hughbanks were married on May 25, 1939, in Indiana, probably in Marion County.

In the 1940 Federal census, John Altmeyer, age 49, working as a machinist, and Freda Altmeyer, age 45, were living in Wayne, Marion County, with one daughter, Juanita Altmeyer, age 12.

In the 1950 Federal census, John Altmeyer, age 50, and Freda Altmeyer, age 55, were living in Wayne. John was working as a machinist.

Services for John Altmeyer, 83, 625 S. Rybolt, a retired machinist, will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Farley West Morris Street Funeral Home. Altmeyer died yesterday at home. He retired in 1956 after 10 years as a machinist with Wolf & Swickerd Co. Survivors – wife Freida; sons Clarence, William, Jay; daughters Edith Hughette; Mrs. Arnold Robbins; Clara Richhart,Mrs. Paul Rose.

Amanda Tames Altmeyer Burdett died on August 16, 1911, and was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery.
