LEE McCleskey LYLE was the fifth and last child, and the second son, of NANCY McCleskey LYLE and DAVID J. LYLE. He was born in Clarke County, Georgia on August 17, 1843.
LEE M. LYLE was enrolled at the University of Georgia. In August 1861 he enlisted as a private soldier in the Cavalry Battalion, Cobb's Legion. He was in the same company with his brother, LT. J. R. LYLE. LEE McCleskey LYLE served until the end of the War. While in Virginia, on his twenty-first birthday, LEE M. LYLE and ROBERTA Young, born November 27, 1845, were married on August 17, 1864 near Fredericks-burg, Virginia. They had fourteen children. No records are known to have survived for five of the fourteen. For a few years after the War, LEE M. LYLE taught at schools in Upper Georgia-Elberton, Bairdstown and Greensboro. In 1872 he was licensed a Local Preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1876 he was admitted on Trial in the Baltimore Conference. He served several appointments in northern Virginia- Fairfax Circuit, Piedmont, Rectortown, Falmouth, Prince Frederick in Maryland, and Springfield. In 1890 REV. LEE McCleskey LYLE transferred into the North Georgia Conference where he served in Athens, Bethlehem, West Monroe, Jonesboro, Senoia, and was appointed to Hampton in 1898, but died almost immediately after moving. REV. LEE McCleskey LYLE died on December 18, 1898. ROBERTA Young LYLE died on September 29, 1901. Both were buried in Athens, in the Oconee Hill Cemetery. While at Senoia, LEE M. LYLE led the congregation in the remodeling of the Church building. Possibly after his death, the people gave a stained-glass window in his memory.
