The Paris, Ark., native was born July 6, 1945. He was a photo engraver for the Courier-Journal newspaper for 30 years. He was a member of Caneyville Christian Church and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a 1963 graduate of Bowling Green High School and was always involved in his class reunions. He was a loving son, brother, father and granddad, who loved to give great big bear hugs. He was a devoted St. Louis Cardinals fan who loved his farm, photography and music. He was a son of the late J.W. Sponel II, who died in 1952, and Mildred South Sponel of Bowling Green, who survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Teresa Estep and her husband, Josh, of Durham, N.C.; two sons, Jeff Sponel and his wife, Melissa, and Jason Sponel and his wife, Christie, all of Louisville; a sister, June Douglas and her husband, Mike, of Bowling Green; a brother, Cecil Sponel of Jacksonville, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Jonathan, Jared, Jaden, Jacob, Joshua, Jackson, Delaney and Rylie; two nieces; and four nephews.
Burial was in Bowling Green Gardens.
