John Alfred Larisey, 76, was called to be with his Lord and Saviour on the evening of August 22, 2023.
John was the second of three children, born to James Betts Larisey, Sr. and Doris Disher Larisey, and came into the world on January 12, 1947 in Charleston, SC. He was predeceased by grandparents, John H. Disher and Marie Entelman Disher; and Alfred Larisey and Annabell Linn Larisey. He is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Deborah Jones Larisey; two sons: John R. Larisey and Daniel P. Larisey; brother, James B. "Sammy" Larisey, Jr.; sister, Ann Larisey Campbell (Harold); nephew, Blake Campbell (Natalie); and nieces: Linn Lindenberg (Ray), Meredith Campbell Cloninger (Ryan); grandnephews: Graham and Maxwell Lindenberg, Barrett, Griffin, Caleb Campbell, Betts Cloninger; and grandnieces: Elle Campbell and Annie Cloninger.
A native Charlestonian, John's early years were spent in the downtown area where he attended James Simmons Elementary School, and began his secondary education at Rivers High School. Hampton Park provided John and his boyhood friends numerous opportunities to play sports and enjoy all the park had to offer curious and energetic boys. While John was in High School he was exposed to the game of golf. He possessed a natural talent for the sport which propelled him to the golf team at Baptist College. John always looked forward to summer vacations at the family beach house on Sullivan's Island. He and his cousins and friends were never lacking for something to do, with all the island had to offer - the beach, boating, fishing, horseback riding and plenty of lazy afternoons. John was a 4th generation member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church on King Street. He and his cousins served as acolytes together in their youth for the Sunday Worship service.
When the family relocated to West Ashley, John attended and graduated from St. Andrew's High School. He began his college career at The Citadel, but then transferred to what is now Charleston Southern University, but was founded as Baptist College at Charleston. Prior to his graduation from college, John served his country by voluntarily enlisting in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He was stationed in Charleston but had the opportunity to visit Germany and Puerto Rico in carrying out his duties as a Load Master.
John began working part time with Bankers Trust at 1 Broad Street, while still in college. After graduation, he was asked to not send resumes to other banking institutions as Bankers Trust saw potential and offered him a full time permanent position. John remained with Bankers Trust as it grew through numerous mergers and acquisitions until it finally became Bank of America. His business degree served him well as he held many different positions in the residential and commercial lending departments. He retired after 36 years of service to the bank as a Senior Executive Vice-President. But, that was not the end of his professional career, as he immediately joined Tidelands Bank in Blufton, SC. John was one of the original lenders for Tidelands and remained with them for 6 years before retiring permanently from his professional banking career.
Bank of America transferred John to Hilton Head Island for a temporary assignment, which lasted 20 years. And of course he had the opportunity to continue his love of golf on most of the islands finest courses. During his golf career, he became a scratch player and had a total of seven "hole in one!" A record he often challenged to his two sons, who also enjoy the game.
John was a loyal friend to all who knew him. He loved his wife, sons, and family and will be missed.
His funeral service will be held Monday, August 28, 2023 in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 405 King Street at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Bethany Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 27, 2023 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
