William was the son of Charles Bell Gibson, an leading surgeon of his day.

William entered Virginia Military Institute from Richmond in 1858, and transferred to the United States Military Academy in 1859. He stood 20th of 48 in the Class of 1863 when he resigned on 22 April 1861 and entered Confederate military service as a C.S. Army cadet. He thereafter served as an artillery officer in various commands, including as Captain of the 16th Texas Field Battery (a/k/a "Gibson's Company") from January 1864 to February 1865. He ended the War as Ordnance Officer of Hugher's Battalion of Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia, and was paroled at Farmville, Virginia in April 1865.

After the War, he worked as a bookkeeper, farmer and miner.
