James E. "Jim" Newell, 81, of Lansdale, passed away Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Abington-Lansdale Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Helen (Beisel) Newell.
Born September 13, 1936, he was a son of the late Randall and Blanche (Yoder Fahringer) Newell.
After serving a four-year term in the United States Air Force, Jim attended Bucknell University where he earned a degree in religion and, more importantly, met the love of his life, Helen. He started his career in the Y.M.C.A. and moved to public service after receiving a Master's Degree at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He served as the Township Manager for Benzinger Township in Elk County, PA, for nearly a decade before taking a consultant position with the Pennsylvania Department of Community Affairs and working in the Governor's Office in Philadelphia until his retirement.
Jim enjoyed music, religion, helping others, and American history. For thirty years, he put several of his interests into practice at the Lansdale United Methodist Church, serving on many committees, helping to rebuild homes and churches on mission trips domestically and abroad, and singing bass in the choir. He also enjoyed doing living history through French & Indian and American Revolutionary War reenacting with the Marines du Contrecoeur, The German Regiment, and the First Continental Regiment of Foot. He was a member of the Honourable Company of Horners, a hornsmith for the Goschenhoppen Historians, and current Vice President of the Oley Yoder Heritage Association.
Surviving with his wife are his daughter, Kim Newell of Lansdale; son, Chris Newell of Seattle, WA; brother, Donald Newell, wife Ruthmary of Manheim, PA; nieces, Amy Newell of Sellersville and Gwen Newell of Manheim. He was predeceased by a sister, Jean Newell, and an infant brother, Edgar Newell.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, February 28th at Lansdale United Methodist Church, 300 N Broad St., Lansdale. Friends and family may call from 6:00-8:00 PM, Tuesday, February 27th at Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, 701 Derstine Ave., Lansdale and from 10:00-11:00 AM, Wednesday February 28th at the church prior to the service. Interment in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Wilkes Barre.
