He was the son of Doris L. (Golden) Smith of Bonneauville and the late Raymond F. Small.
Jim was a 1970 graduate of Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown. He was self employed as an electrician and plumber and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hanover, the McSherrystown Knights of Columbus, McSherrystown Home Association, Catholic War Veterans in Bonneauville, and the Builders Association of Adams County.
He was the husband of Marion M. (Lawrence) Small, his wife of 29 years, and surviving, in addition to her, are four children, James R. Small, Jr. and wife, Tracy of Abbottstown, Anthony J. Small of McSherrystown, Wendy M. Small of McSherrystown, and Kristy J. Small of Middletown; two sisters, Lorie Keeney of Littlestown and Kay Martin of Spring Grove; three brothers, Jeffrey Small of Gettysburg, Bradley Small of New Oxford, and David Small of Gettysburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
