Adam James Smurthwaite

Adam James Smurthwaite was born at home May 21, 1985 in Gilroy, California, the 10th child of Michael Smurthwaite and Heather Hunter. He graduated from this life March 9, 2023 in the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Adam grew up happy, healthy, lovable, athletic, talented and bright. He qualified for the Gifted and Talented Education program in grade school. He played Anna's son in the community theatre production of "The King and I". He was baptized, ordained a deacon, then teacher, and priest at the proper ages and received his patriarchal blessing.
Several TBI's, and a Type I Diabetes diagnosis at age 13 began his life challenges. His desire for friends made him susceptible to peers who led him into the drug and alcohol culture. In spite of this he was captain of the tennis team, loved dances (incredible dancer), had several different jobs, earned his eagle scout award, toured Japan with the Gilroy High School Chamber Singers, cited as outstanding male vocalist, and graduated with an Auto Mechanic Scholarship.
He attended WyoTech Auto Mechanics School when his parents served a mission, but dropped out due to many diabetic seizures – which also blocked his mental, emotional and spiritual growth, and he ended up living on the streets. When his parents came home he lived with them, sincerely repented of his addictions, turning back to his true self, attended Junior college, had several jobs, and was active in Church, even with a seizure-damaged brain. But the seizures continued and became a brain pattern.
When they moved to Utah, he was accepted into the DSPD program for disabled, and was able to do volunteer work. He did baptisms in the temple, was ordained an Elder in 2010, and identified intensely with his family, longing for their approval and to have a wife and family like they did.
At age 37 yrs, he had a testimony and wanted to choose the right, and even though severely mentally impaired, his heart was on the right path, fighting his hardest against the effects of the seizures, medications, language impairment and memory loss. Passing on freed him from that burden.
The cause of death was severe complications of diabetes. He is survived by his parents, 9 siblings and 61 nieces and nephews who love him. He taught us all so much about patience, compassion, and the worth of a soul. Our lives are all so much better because of his. He is a noble, loving soul. He will continue to "learn and grow" and serve in the Spirit World, and receive all that God has for him.
Funeral services will be held on Friday March 17, 2023 at 11:00 am Parkway 8th Ward, 9894 South 2700 West, South Jordan, Utah, with a viewing from 9:30 – 10:30 am. Interment at Redwood Memorial Cemetery.
