GERVAIS, The Most Reverend Marcel André
Archbishop of Ottawa 1989-2007

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of His Grace, the Most Reverend Marcel A. Gervais, Archbishop Emeritus of Ottawa. Archbishop Gervais died on Sunday, August 6, 2023, at The Shenkman Palliative Care Unit at Bruyère - Saint-Vincent Campus in Ottawa, at the age of 91.

Son of the late Frederick Pierre Gervais and the late Marie-Louise Beaudry, predeceased by his brothers Louis, Télésphore (Muriel Casler), Adrien (Evelyn Morris), Henri, Laurent (Patricia Devine), Charles and sisters Majella (Alex Dowhaniuk) and Thérèse (George Gauthier).

Archbishop Gervais was born in Elie, Manitoba on September 21, 1931. He attended primary school in Manitoba before moving with his family to Southwestern Ontario in 1945. After training in philosophy and theology, he was ordained a priest on May 31, 1958, for the Diocese of London, Ontario. In the years that followed, Archbishop Gervais studied theology and Sacred Scripture in Rome and Jerusalem before coming back to Canada and serving as professor of Sacred Scripture until 1980 at St. Peter's Seminary.

Archbishop Gervais was called to the Episcopate in 1980, and was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of London, Ontario. Five years later, the Holy Father appointed him Bishop of Sault Ste. Marie, and then Archbishop of Ottawa on September 27, 1989.

For over 17 years, Archbishop Gervais served as the Archbishop of Ottawa. He was deeply and lovingly committed to God, His Church, and to the faithful he had been called to serve. He convoked the Diocesan Synod of 1992, focused on youth ministry and adult faith development, which led to structural changes at the Archdiocese and in the parishes, with greater lay participation in decision-making processes. He supported new communities such as the Companions of the Cross, the National Evangelization Teams (NET) and Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO). He had a heart for Indigenous Peoples set on faithfully ministering to them and encouraged the establishment of the Kateri Native Ministry in the Ottawa area. Recognizing the changing cultural fabric of the Capital region, he was the first bishop to incardinate African priests who came to serve in the Archdiocese. The renovation of Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica in Ottawa, a major undertaking, was also accomplished under his direction.

On May 14, 2007, Pope Benedict accepted Archbishop Gervais' resignation due to his age. He chose to retire in Ottawa which he considered his home and be with family in the area. In retirement, he remained active, conducting retreats and doing pastoral ministry.

Archbishop Gervais will lie in state at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Ottawa from 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, August 14, 2023. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. Entombment will follow in the Cathedral crypt.
