Guy S. Bennett was born to Ira Lafayette Bennett (1863-1920) and Susan Sampson Bennett (1871-1957) in Lakewood, PA on August 12, 1892. He was a member of a railroad family. His father was a fireman on the New York, Ontario and Western Railway and his brother Oscar O. Bennett served as an engineer for the O&W. Brother Roy served as a trainman for the Delaware and Hudson Railway.

Guy Bennett began service on the Ontario and Western as a fireman, graduated to engineer and ended his career as General Road Foreman. Guy Bennett and his brother Oscar had the distinction of operating the first diesel powered freight trains on the O&W.
