James M. Sebastian is the son of Wesley Sebastian and Emily "Millie" Birchfield. He fought with the Union in the Civil War. His brother Jacob Wesley Sebastian died at Andersonville Confederate prison camp. James lost his right leg. After becoming Sergeant Major he returned to civilian life and studied law. In 1865 he passed the bar and was appointed Master Commissioner of the Owsley Circuit Court. He married Deborah Adelaide Needham in 1866. They had seven children;
James Grant, Elizabeth (Peters), Laura Adelaide (Hale),
Dr. John Needham, Daisy Deborah (Rose), and two who died young - Wille and Belle. The death and burial of his wife Laura isunknown. He is said to have become a Judge just before his death. There is no known photo of him. He is described as being 6'4" and 300 pounds with a peg leg.
