Several years of research by his GG Granddaughter and DNA evidence has linked several children of this man with two spouses.

Calvin Harper "CH" Bane or sometimes spelled Bain was born about 1844 in Iowa. His parents were Robert Bane and Sarah Davidson. During the Civil War he served as a Sergeant in Company A in the Iowa 22nd Regiment and was wounded at Cedar Creek, Virginia Oct 19, 1864.

On Sept 17, 1868 he married Catherine Bowman at Johnson County, Iowa. He was a lawyer by trade after the war and moved to Nebraska with his family. He and Catherine had four daughters. Lu Ella Bane Altschuler (1869-1942), Grace Bane (1874-1949), Ida May Bane Ownes (1877-1961) and a young daughter Jessie Bane who died in 1873.

According to a 1898 newspaper article C. H. Bane left for Hot Springs, Arkansas and a few days later his name showed up as list of people staying in a hotel at Little Rock, Arkansas. I don't know if he ever legally divorced Catherine or just left her and their children. He was mentioned as a deceased spouse in her obituary. Also, it appears that there was some sort of dispute over who was the beneficiary in C. H. Bane's Civil War pension Catherine or his second wife Lizze Smothers Bane.

C. H. Bane and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Smothers were married July 9, 1903 in Sevier County, Arkansas and then they moved to Red River County, Texas. There are several records mentioning C. H. Bane in land transactions in Red River County and the family appeared in the 1910 Census living in the Manchester area. The Bane name isn't transcribed correctly in the census and even the children's names listed are hard to decipher. But it is clearly C. H. Bane and his wife Lizzie with three children. Lizzie Smothers Bane had one daughter when they married. Her married name was Pearl Suggs (1899-1976).
I believe C. H. Bane and Lizzie Smothers had two children together. A son John Henry Bain (1905-1977) and a daughter Dorothy Mildred "Dollie" Bain Masters (1910-1985). DNA evidence suggests these were the only two full siblings by the couple.

Civil War pension records indicate that C. H. Bane died March 17, 1911 probably in Red River County, Texas.

DNA evidence suggests that Lizzie Smothers Bane had two other daughters before her death sometime around 1920. C. H. Bane was deceased during this time so their father or fathers are unknown at this time. Although evidence suggests they both took the Bane or Bain last name from their mother. Bertha Lee Bane (1914-2005) who was adopted by an Edwards family. She married William Odus Harvey. And then Bessie Lee Bain (1919-1989) who was adopted by the Kay family. She married Henry H. Hartman.
The last time Lizzie Smothers Bain was mentioned was in the 1920 census where she was living in Potter, Polk County, Arkansas in the county poor farm with her infant daughter Bessie Bain. All of her other children including John H. Bain had either been adopted or were living with other families in Polk County, Arkansas.

If anyone has any questions about these people or their connection to each other please contact me. I have worked on the DNA connection of all these siblings. I will gladly share what information I have collected.
