As a young man in the Pacific Northwest, Ron trained as an electrician and was part of the team who built the Bonneville Dam in 1936-37.

When WW II broke out, Ron enlisted and served in the US Army as a radio repair instructor at Camp Crowder, in southwest Missouri. There he met (in the commissary) and married Barbara Louise Bullard, and after his discharge settled in the area working as an electrician.

Ron's hobby was woodworking, and he made many pieces of miniature furniture for his daughter Laura. He also made a bed, a desk, and several other full-size pieces.
