OLD PIONEER GONE. Death of Don Luis A. Arguello at Santa Clara. had been ill for over a year. His Father Was the First Mexican Governor of the State of California

Don Luis A. Arguello, an old pioneer resident of this county, died at the family residence in Santa Clara at 2 o'clock yesterday morning after a lingering illness, lasting over a year. His demise was not unexpected as he has been seriously ill for two weeks past, hence the family were in a measure prepared for this sad event. The death of this well-known man was greatly regretted by all who knew him. Don Luis A. Arguello was born at the Presidio, San Francisco, July 15, 1830. His father was the first Mexican Governor of the State of California, being elected to this position by the convention assembled in Monterey in 1823. In 1836, when young Don Luis was six years old, the family removed to Santa Clara where the Arguello family has resided ever since. In 1851 Don Luis was married to Miss Maria Angela Berryessa and by her had twenty-two children, most of whom died during infancy. Those who survive him are Miss Marguerite F. Arguello, Mrs. Z. T. George of Los Angeles, Mrs. R. A. Barron of San Francisco, James S. Arguello, Albert Arguello, who is employed on the Mexican Central Railroad in the City of Mexico, and Albert R. Arguello. The Don's first wife died in August 1895 and some time later he was married to Mrs. E. D. Peralta who is living at the present time. It has been decided that the funeral will take place Wednesday from the family residence, corner Santa Clara and Main streets, and the interment will be in the Santa Clara Cemetery. Father Raggio will officiate. It is said that Don Luis Arguello inherited property valued at $500,000. Nearly all this, it is rumored, had been deeded to his several children before the time of his second marriage. James S. Arguello, the youngest son, has been his business agent for the past eight years
