He married Anna Maria Evans, fathered Anna Maria, Susanna Cordelia, Margaret Ellen, John, Emma, William E. , Frances E. (b. 01/21/63, d. 03/27/63), Jennie L. , Maria May ), Minnie Bedliah, and George. In 1860, he was a shoemaker living in Southampton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 5" tall with light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted - understating his age by eleven years - and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg February 29, 1864, as a private with Battery E, 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (112th Pa). Because the regiment over recruited, on April 22, 1864, he was among those transferred to Battery B, 2nd Pennsylvania Provisional Heavy Artillery. He was wounded in the left hand in action at Petersburg, Virginia, June 18, 1864, losing his ring finger. On June 30, 1864, he was admitted to Mt. Pleasant U.S. Hospital, Washington DC, but "transferred north on July 28, 1864" and honorably discharged May 20, 1865, from the military hospital in York.
