Tony Tranfa, the Daily Breeze's Web site editor and frequent jazz critic during his 24 years at the newspaper, died Wednesday following a brief illness.
He was a longtime musician (guitar for 30 years as well as seven other instruments including piano) -- Jazz/pop writer for 20 years covering recordings, live dates, etc. (5 Grammy Awards ceremonies, many Playboy Jazz Festivals) -- Invited voter in annual Village Voice newspaper national music critics' poll -- Charter member of National Music Critics Association -- Former member of rock groups Highstreet, Mandrake, San Luis Jazz, Pubhouse. -- Former guitarist and arranger in University Jazz Band at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo -- Veteran songwriter and arranger.
Tranfa is survived by his wife, Katherine, a daughter, Sarah; his parents, Marge Tranfa of Newhall and Frank Tranfa of Woodlands, Texas; and his sister, Valerie Tranfa of Valencia; and two half-brothers, Frank of Arlington, Va., and Philip of Manassas, Va.
