Ray was born to Amanda Josephine "Josie" Barker Murphree and William Samuel "Sam" Murphree in May 1935. He grew up in the family homeplace on the banks of Stamp Creek in Keowee Township near Salem, and he lived in the Boones Creek community for the past 56 years. He worked as a textile mill mechanic, and retired from Mayfair Mills in Pickens in 1997. He was a member of Salem Methodist Church. Having farmed from his youth, Ray loved tending his garden and spending time in nature. With his keen mechanical instinct, he also enjoyed working with his hands. He could repair almost anything, and he was a friend to all he met.
Ray is preceded in death by his mother Josie, his father Sam, and his five siblings: Tom, Esther, Lucille, Bill, and Blanche.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sarah; his children: Catherine (John Bolton), Shaun (Kim), and Josh (Shelly); and several beloved grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
