He was born on September 29, 1923, in Drakesboro, KY to the late Ida Ursa Funk and Dr. Adrian Griffith Back, Sr. A graduate of Hodgenville High School, he attended UK on a basketball scholarship, playing for Adolph Rupp then the Naval Academy where he was a Helms Athletic Foundation All American, member of the 1945 national champion Lacrosse team and was inducted into the Navy Sports Hall of Fame. After college he played professional basketball for the US Navy and became a Naval Aviator, serving during the end of WWII. In 1949 he married the late Linda Lee Ferrill and attempted to leave the Navy and go into business in Hodgenville but was "caught" by the Korean War. A.G. served until the end of the Korean War in 1953, when he resigned his commission and returned to Hodgenville for good and began his business career, going into business with Linda's family, selling cars, tractors and banking. After "retiring" three times, he was currently chairman emeritus at Lincoln National Bank.
Along with his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Otis Kent Back; a sister, Ursa Linn Coleman and two grandsons, Nathan Stanton Leach and Marshall Leach.
A.G. is survived by two daughters, Mary D. Meredith and Linda (Paul) Fauri, both of Louisville; four grandchildren, Doc Meredith, Andy (Whitney) Meredith, Adrian (Carrie) Leach and Griffin (Sara) Meredith and nine great-grandchildren.
In keeping with his wishes, A. G. was cremated and a private family graveside service will be held at Red Hill Cemetery with Rev. George Smith officiating.
It was his request that no flowers be sent and donations in his memory be sent to the Lincoln Museum, 66 Lincoln Square, Hodgenville, KY 42748
