William Eugene Syling, age 93, of Uniontown, Pa., died Thursday, March 27, 2008, in the Cherry Tree Nursing Center, Uniontown, Pa.

He was born March 19, 1915, in Bellwood, Pa., the son of Eugene C. Syling and Susan Aurandt Syling.

"Gene" graduated from Bellwood High School and he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University.

He was a member of the Triangle Fraternity.

He served as a Captain with the United States Army Signal Corps during World War II.

He retired from the now former Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania in 1977 with 40 years of service.

He was a member of the Bell Telephone Pioneers.

"Gene" was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where he had served on the Official Board, was on the Ushering Team and was a member of the Men's Bible Class.

He was a member and past President of the Uniontown Kiwanis Club.

He was also a member of the Aliquippa Lodge No. 375 F. and A. M. since 1939, the Uniontown Lodge of Perfection, Pittsburgh Consistory, Scottish Rite, Shrine A.A.O.N.M.S. and Caravan No. 9.

"Gene" was preceded in death by his parents.

"Gene" is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia Elizabeth "Betty" Scott Syling; his children: Betty Jean Garrett and her husband, Thomas H., of Honeoye Falls, New York, Dr. William Syling and his wife, Dorothy, of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and Carol Black and her husband, Thomas A., of Flower Mound, Texas; six grandchildren: Jamie Gallo and her husband, Steven, of Atlanta, Georgia, Thomas W. Garrett and his wife, Victoria, of Sparta, New Jersey, Kym Huhn and Her husband, Thadd, of Murrieta, California, Christopher Syling, San Diego, California, Tiffany Neal and husband, Nicholas, of Keller, Texas, and Damian Black of Flower Mound, Texas; seven great granddaughters and one great grandson.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the ANDREW D. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME INC., 80 Morgantown Street, Uniontown, Pa., where the family will receive friends on Sunday, March 30, 2008, from Noon until 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Visitation will continue at the Funeral Home on Monday, March 31, 2008, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. followed by a service celebrating his life at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Roger Howard officiating.

Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill, Pennsylvania.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 47 of Uniontown will accord Full Military Rites and Honors at the Cemetery.

Masonic Services will be held in the Funeral Home on Sunday, March 30, 2008, at 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church, 20 Dunbar Street, Uniontown, PA 15401.
