Gary Lynn Jones
Thursday, December 27th, 1951 - Wednesday, July 26th, 2023

Gary Lynn Jones, known by many as "Jonesy," 71, of Solsberry, Indiana, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2023 at the IU Health Bloomington Hospice House, after a hard fought battle with a rare and fast-moving form of leukemia. He was surrounded by his three loving children and longtime, devoted girlfriend who held his hands as he made his way home.

Born December 27, 1951 at Greene County General Hospital in Linton, Indiana, he was the devoted son of Anna Verna Ruth (Livingston) Jones and the youngest of six children. He attended Eastern High School, was a member of the United Methodist Church, and worked 37 years at General Electric. A glorious, adventure-filled 15-year retirement was the reward after a long, hot career building refrigerators.

In 1970, he married the mother of his children and began a 50-year stint of being a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was actively involved in all aspects of their life, ensuring they were loved and supported into adulthood. He coached baseball and basketball, scouted volleyball, attended athletic matches and band concerts no matter the ridiculous drive or time of day, gave common sense advice, and taught the next generation skills that will benefit their families for years to come. He was everything you would want or need a Dad or "Gaga" to be.

He was creative. Not only was he a clever carpenter but he could tell a joke, play multiple instruments, sing, and was a prolific songwriter. He leaves behind more than sixty original songs that are priceless windows into his unique perspective on life.

Gary had a fiercely independent nature which was endearing. He marched to the beat of his own drum and relished in being a little different than his peers.

He was a trusted and loyal friend. Whether playing weekly full-court basketball, taking motorcycle trips cross country, helping with big projects, or just being one of the guys, the group of friends he accumulated over the years is special.

Gary is survived by longtime girlfriend, Regina Fox; his three children, Erin Helton (Jeremy) of Owensburg, Rachael Jones McAfee (Mike) of Bloomington, and Brandon Jones, of Solsberry; eight grandchildren, Brent Fielder (Maddison), Ethan Helton (Lydia), Andrew Helton, Treyce Jones, Hannah Crouch, Tori Crouch, Zoe McAfee, and Tessa McAfee; two great-grandchildren, Nash and Knox Fielder; brother, Ray Jones of Urbana, IL; sister, Lana Koblinsky of Woodbury, TN; the mother of his children and neighbor, Diana Ray of Solsberry; extended family Jason Fulton, Valerie Fulton, and Remi Lytle, and many nieces and nephews. He was rich in family.

Gary was preceded in death by his precious daughter, Jennifer Lynn Jones; mother, Ann Ruth Jones; sisters Ruth Burns and Nancy Barrett; and brother Stephen Jones.

Visitation will be from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third Street Bloomington, Indiana.
