Born and raised in Houston, she was the daughter of Robert and Dorsey Haining. As a young teen, she met the young man she would one day marry while they both worked at the A & P. In 1948, after his return from military service, she and Earl Aubrey Young, Jr. were married in Houston. They had four children.

Ruth and Earl moved to Elkins Lake near Huntsville in 1988, where she led the Bible Study Fellowship. Following his death in 1989, she stayed in Huntsville until 1996, and then Baytown her home before moving into Brighton Gardens Assisted Living in Bellaire in 2007. "Gommy", as she was known to everyone, was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren. A devout Christian woman, she became a longtime member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Baytown and loved her church family. She was an active volunteer with LOVE, Inc., a member of the Cedar Bayou Garden Club, and spent many hours volunteering at Stephen F. Austin Elementary School. After moving to Bellaire, she transferred her membership to Christ Church Cathedral. She had many hobbies and was an avid antique dealer and collector. She loved shopping, especially bargain hunting, and enjoyed watching the Food Network on television.

In addition to Earl, her beloved husband of forty years, she was preceded in death by her young daughter, Peggy Joan Young. Her loving family includes her son, Fredrick Young and his wife, Mary, of Houston; daughters, Candace Ochoa and husband, Art, of Baytown, and Nancy Martin and husband, Jay, of Houston; six grandchildren, Daniel Young and wife, Regina, Sarah Shrode and husband, Daron, Meghan and Kelly Ochoa, and Matthew and Michael Martin, and one great-grandchild on the way. She also leaves Maggie, her faithful Dachshund and constant companion, and many treasured friends. Her family extends special thanks to Lois Gregory and Peggy Williamson, Christian Scott, Peggy and the staff of A-Med, and Rachel and staff at Brighton Gardens for their love and care.

Honoring the family as pallbearers will be Bill Young, Jr., Daniel Young, Daron Shrode, Mike Werner, Dan Pinson, and Meyer Chaskin. Ruth's grandsons, Matthew and Michael Martin, will serve as honorary pallbearers.
