Revolutionary War Veteran
ANOTHER OLD SOLDIER GONE!
DIED--On the 16th, April, ult, CHRISTOPHER BURKET, of Shade township, Somerset County, PA., age 102 years.
The deceased was the father of a numerous family, and left a widow aged 96, with whom he has lived in the bonds of matrimony for upwards of 75 years. He was born, it is believed, in Franklin County, having removed from the banks of the Conogocheague to this county, about 72 yrs. since.
He is buried with the honors of war. Capt. Hite's company, of Stoystown Guards, accompanied his remains to the tomb, and firing the customary salute over the Patriot's grave, for he was a soldier in the "times which tried men's souls." Under the celebrated Captain Brady, on the Western frontiers, whether engaged as a spy, or skirmisher, or hand to hand, with the merciless Indian, he proved equal to all the hazards, toils and dangers of the perilous time. In fine he was one of the band of hardy Pioneers of the West, of whom the immortal Washington made the declaration, "that their service were equal, if not superior in daring bravery and heroic deeds, to those of the Heroes of the regular line.
It is proper to add that a very large concourse people attended the corpse to its last resting place, and a few brief extemporaneous, but elegant remarks where made at the tomb, by Samuel Kimmel, Esq., of Stoystown, in relation to the life, character, and services of the deceased veteran.
Peace to his ashes.

Franklin County was formed on Sept. 9th 1784 per Wikipedia.
So the paper quotes him from Franklin, such it was at the time, Cumberland was formed 29 Jan 1750 per Wikipedia. So Cumberland and Lancaster more likely.

Christopher is one of 7 living children at the time of Israel Burkets death, Israel d. Dec. 1804. Christopher's brother Johann George b. Berks Co., and Johann Jacob b. d 1834 St. Clair Twp., Bedford Co. PA along with a few sisters. Israel is married to Anna Maria, one can assume married having and having a child baptized prior to their voyage.

Large family! Married to Mary Ann Ross. He lived a long life and they had a long marriage.

Some of the children: Based on Michael's birth year and Mary Ann and Christopher married upwards to 75 yrs. makes one wonder how Michael can be his first...doubtful. I'm sure the children can have a good 20 yr. age difference from oldest to youngest, if not greater than 20 yr. difference.

Michael Burket b. 05 Mar 1782 (married twice) LBK's line.
