Dickie was born on September 4, 1936 in Front Royal, VA. He was the son of the late Joel Thomas Kirkland and Mary Frances Figgins Kirkland.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Gail Shipe Kirkland.
Dickie served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He also served as the Chaplain for the American Legion Post #53 and the Front Royal VFW for 17 years. Dickie loved dirt track racing, high school wrestling, and WWE wrestling. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Front Royal.
He is survived by his daughter Sherry Lee Kirkland and companion Rick Souder of Front Royal, VA and his son Richard Earl "Rick" Kirkland Jr. and wife Bonnie Kirkland of Friedens, PA; sister Kitty Sue Jarrell of Edenton, NC; three grandchildren: Michael Sean Gilkey, Brittany Kirkland Compher and husband Kyle, Richard Earl "Trey" Kirkland III and wife Lauren; and six great grandchildren: Kendall, Kason, Eli, MyKayla, Waylon, and Reagan.
He was previously married to Fern Estelle Bowman from 1958 to 1978.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Dickie on July 22, 2023 at 1 p.m. at the Front Royal American Legion. There will be a meal following the celebration if anyone would like to bring a covered dish. Please try to have it at the Legion by 12:30. The family welcomes friends to share any fond memories of Dickie with all at his Celebration of Life.
