Mrs. Sam Wood Dies In Houston Wednesday Nite
Funeral Services Will Be Conducted Friday Afternoon
Mrs. Sam Wood, 31 who died in the St. Joseph sanitarium, Houston TExas, Wednesday night at 11:25, following an illness of several weeks, will be buried at either Winnfield or Calvin Friday afternoon. Due to the fact that her husband would not arrive here before Thursday night, the burial plans were not known by local relatives. Mrs. Wood who was Miss Bertha Machen, a native of Calvin, is well known throughout this parish. She is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Machen of Calvin, and a graduate of the Calvin High School. Before her marriage to Mr. Sam Wood of Winnfield, she was employed several years as stenographer in the office of Clerk of Court C. F. Walsworth. Death came as a result of brights disease and pheumonia. Surviving are her husband, Sam Wood, pharmicist of Houston, a young daughter, Joyce Anne; one brother, Ebb Machen, of Winnfield, and a half brother and sister, Mrs. Dewey Garrett and Lloyd Machen, both of Calvin.

Many Out of Town People Attend Last Rites For Mrs. Wood
Mrs. Bertha Machen Wood, 32 years of age, who died in St. Joseph Sanitarium, Houston, Texas, Wednesday night, March 3rd, was buried in the Winnfield Cemetery, Friday, March 5. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church of which Mrs. Wood was a member. Active Pallbearers were Jewel Maxey, J. G. Carter, E. K. Carter, of Calvin, Horace Chandler of Calvin, S. C. Jackson of Calvin, R. B. Carter of Pine Prairie, C. F. Walsworth, Arvel Carter of Calvin, Wesley Carter of Calvin, Lloyd Key and Ira Key. Mrs. Wood was the former Bertha Machen, daughter of the late Mrs. Donie Carter Machen and Frank Machen of Calvin. After finishing school at Calvin, she attended the Tyler Business School and was employed as stenographer in the clerk of court's office at Winnfield for several years. She and Sam Wood were married January 5, 1931 and soon after moved to Houston, Texas. She is survived by her husband and a four year old daughter, Joyce Anne. Relatives who attend the funeral were Mrs. G. R. Burnett and R. B. Carter of Pine Prairie, Mr. and Mrs. I. C. Blake of Jonesboro, Mr. and Mrs. T. W.
