Obituary:
The Rev. John Stephen Ham was born in Schuyler County, Missouri, October 28, 1848. At the age of thirteen, he moved to Illinois, where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Nancy Emmaline Scranton, on August 8, 1867, where they lived for many years.

In the year 1882, he was ordained a minister in the Primitive or "Hard-shell" Baptist Church. He continued in this service until his health failed in 1923. For most of their early married life, they lived near Nebo, Illinois, where most of their children were born. To this union there were born twelve children; six boys and six girls, three of whom died in infancy.

About the year 1906 he took a homestead in Wheeler County, Nebraska, about 15 miles west of Elgin, Nebraska and about six miles north of Bartlett, Nebraska, the county seat of Wheeler County. After proving-up on the homestead, they moved to Texas and lived on a farm near Delhart. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Seneca, New Mexico on August 26, 1917. His wife, Nancy Emmaline (Scranton) Ham passed away a few months later on December 23, of that same year.

In 1920 he was united in marriage to Nancy Todd who passed away in 1923. He made his home in Mitchell, Nebraska the last nine months of his life with his oldest daughter, Mrs. O.L. Tipton, where he passed away Friday evening at 8:15 on June 22, 1928. He is survived by nine of his children and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Mrs. O. L. Tipton of Mitchell, Nebraska; Mrs. Arthur Harsin, Scottsbluff, Nebraska; Tilden Ham of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Mae Vernon of Elgin, Nebraska; and Mrs. Fannie Crum of Lincoln, Nebraska.

The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. E. D. Gideon (Trinity Methodist Church minister of Mitchell) at 10:00 AM, Sunday, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Tipton. Burial was in the Mitchell Valley Cemetery, south of Mitchell, Nebraska.
