Sterling, as he was known by his family, was a son of John McCarty and Elizabeth ,Betsy, Mayes.

Sterling married Charlotte Guttry on 26 March 1844 in Greene County, MO. They had one known child named John W. McCarty born about 1845. Who died as a soldier in the Civil War on 10 Jun 1865. After Charlotte died, Sterling married Charlotte's sister Martha B Gutty on 17 February 1852. Martha had been married to Russell Stokes before she married Sterling. Sterling and Martha would have two sons, William born about 1853 and James born about 1855. The names and years of birth are from the 1860 Greene County, MO Census.

Andrew married a third time to Lurany "Raney" Etheridge on 8 Jul 1856 in Bourbon County, KS. They would have three daughters, Charlotte Ann Elizabeth McCarty born 16 JUN 1857, Sarah Ellen McCarty born 19 OCT 1858 and Caria M McCarty born in June 1860. All three were born in Bourbon County, KS

Sterling and his nephew Thomas Loven McCarty both joined the 6th Regiment Missouri Cavalry Volunteers, Union. Both died while in service to their country. Sterling joined the 6th Regiment on August 27, 1861. His left leg was hit by a bullet, it had to be amputated. He died October 24, 1862 in a hospital in Helena, AR. He left behind his three sons, John, William and James McCarty. According to the descrptive roll of the 6th MO Cavalry, he was 5' 7 1/2" tall with black hair, hazel eyes and had a dark complexion.
