As a child, Elsie lived on the family farm in Monroe Co, GA. At age 19, she moved to Atlanta and worked at the Central of Georgia Railroad Freight Office. She attended Atlanta Business College in 1919 and then worked for Portland Cement Company.

She married Roland Byrd on 27 Nov 1926 and they divorced in 1949. They had no children.
