Jim was born in Somerville, MA. He attended Boston College and although a member of the class of 1943, he completed his coursework for a degree in Physics in 1942. While at BC he was also in the Naval Reserve and upon graduation joined the Navy and was soon studying electronics at Harvard and submarine radar at MIT. Arriving in Pearl Harbor he was assigned to a new submarine out of Portsmouth, NH, the USS Pomfret and spent 3 years in submarines in the Pacific Theater. He made five war patrols off the coast of Japan, where he earned a Bronze Star for Valor, rescuing a downed American pilot in outer Tokyo Bay, and one patrol in Philippine waters. He ended his Navy service as a Lieutenant Commander.
After his military service Jim joined the FBI and soon after married Eleanor (Sis) Finn. They were happily married for 59 years. Jim was always saddened that they did not reach 60. During his FBI career he was assigned to offices in San Francisco, Carmel, Washington, DC, and finally back to Boston, where Jim and Eleanor raised their family in Winthrop MA. He loved to tell the story of his capture of a top ten criminal on the FBI's most wanted list. After a distinguished career of 32 years, Jim retired to Falmouth. Sadly, their son James (Chip) passed away in 2003 and Eleanor passed away in 2005.
Jim is survived by his three daughters: Sheila Abbott and her husband Andrew, Kathleen Rowe and her husband Maurice, and Jean Canty Schwartz, all of Falmouth, his grandchildren: Kathleen, Mark, Ken, Beth, Michael, Jared, and Devin, and ten great grandchildren: Finn, Jack, Nicholas, Nora, Sally, Charlie, Henry, Audrey, Brielle and Chloe.
For the past 12 years, Jim has enjoyed a happy companionship with Ellen Peebles whom he met at the St. Thomas Chapel on Falmouth Harbor.
Jim loved a party, a pint at Liam's and visits with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Crossword puzzles kept his mind sharp and a walk along Falmouth Harbor with Ellen in the afternoon was a fixture in his daily schedule up until a month ago. We were blessed to have had him in our lives for as long as we did.
Jim was a Communicant of St. Anthony's Church. There will be a Memorial Mass and a Celebration of Life at a later date.
Gifts in his memory can be made to St. Francis House, PO Box 55859, Boston MA 02205-5859.
