Dexter O. "Dex" Jones, age 87, Logansport, passed away at 9:50 p.m. Wednesday, June 21st, in his residence, in the comfortable surroundings of his home and family.
Born July 27, 1935, in White Plains, New York, he was the son of Dexter O. Jones, Sr., and Mildred Boutilier Jones.
He was married to Patricia L. Stephenson, who preceded him in death in 1994. He then married Rose Ann O'Connor Steel, who survives.
Also surviving are a sister, Kathleen Benson; one stepson, three stepdaughters, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Dex was a graduate of Mount Hermon High School in 1964. He then served in the United States Army, attending the Army Transportation School in Fort Eustas, Virginia, from 1955 until 1958.
In 1962, Dex graduated from Monmouth College in West Long Branch, New Jersey.
He had a life-long and diverse career in railroading. Starting in 1962 he was a transportation officer for the New York Central railroad in New York, Indiana and Ohio. From 1969 to 1979, he was the manager of industrial development for the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company in Chicago. He was promoted to Trainmaster with the C&NW in Freemont, Nebraska, and Boone, Iowa.
While in Logansport, he volunteered delivering "meals on wheels" for 15 years, driving the train at Riverside Park, and photographing the annual "Race for Grace" sponsored by Calvary Presbyterian Church.
Dex was an avid photographer, enjoyed traveling with family and friends, and appreciated lighthouses. He was a member of the Logansport Elks, BPOE #66 and served in various officer positions.
He was also a dedicated member of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Logansport, where he had been a Deacon and served on the Board of Elders.
Dexter was easy-going, made friends easily, and was well-liked everywhere he went. He was always willing to lend a hand, as evidenced through the hours he spent volunteering in the community. He had many friends and a loving family.
He is most remembered for his photography skills and interest in anything related to trains. Dexter enjoyed building and operating an extensive model railroad, and monthly gatherings with "the railroad group". He had several cats over the years, each one bringing him joy.
