Clara was the daughter of Joseph Chamberlain a successful shoe manufacturer and Caroline(Harben) daughter of a cheese and beer merchant. Sister of Joseph Chamberlain Liberal politician and Mayor of Birmingham and Richard Chamberlain, Liberal politician and M.P for Islington, London. She married Frederick Ryland in 1885 when she was 34 and they went on to have 5 daughters. By the time of their marriage Frederick was a successful mechanical engineer and by1891 they were living in Baskerville House,Harbourne on their own means with 4 servants. Sadly by 1901 she was a widow her eldest daughter 12 and her youngest just 4 when their father died she was rich enough not to worry and continued to live in Baskerville house with her widowed sister and 6 servants until her death in 1915.
