CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Dr. Earl Douglas Allara, 77, of Charles Town, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Inova Hospital, Fairfax, Va.

Born Feb. 4, 1925, in Matewan, W.Va., he was the son of the late Jack M. and Mamie H. Humphreys Allara.

He was a graduate of Iaeger (W.Va.) High School; West Virginia University, where he lettered in basketball; and the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.

He retired in 1992 after practicing medicine for 40 years in Charles Town. He formerly served as chief of staff at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va. He also served on the Jefferson County Board of Health for many years.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he was awarded two bronze stars.

He was a member of Zion Episcopal Church in Charles Town.

He was a member of Sleepy Hollow Golf and Country Club of Charles Town, and served as the physician for Citizens Fire Co. of Charles Town.

In 1987, he received the Jefferson County Citizen's Award.

He assisted with the physical examinations of football players at the former Charles Town High School and at Jefferson High School.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rebecca "Becky" Alger Allara; one daughter, Rebecca Kirby of Charles Town; one son, E. Douglas Allara Jr. of Charles Town; one brother, Bobby Allara of Iaeger; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Zion Episcopal Church, Charles Town. The Rev. John Alfriend will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.
