George Swigart Hanawalt (surname means "cock of the woods" in German) was the eldest of ten known children of Joseph Rothrock Hanawalt (1810-1877) and Mary Swigart Hanawalt (1813-1864), who married 28 Jan 1830 at McVeytown, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. After Mary died, Joseph remarried to the widow Eva (went by Evy) Sophia French Kaufman (1843-1912) on 22 Sep 1866 in Pennsylvania and had an additional six children with her.

George first married to Caroline Matilda Hanawalt (1837-1858) on 09 Nov 1856 in Pennsyvlania. George and Caroline were the parents of one known child, namely:

After his first wife Caroline died, George remarried to Barbara Brumbaugh Replogle (1842-1873) on 01 Feb 1860 near New Enterprise, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. George and Barbara were the parents of nine known children, namely:

Family History Reminiscenses of Elder George S. Hanawalt, ca. 1911:

"George Hanawalt, son of Joseph R. [...] and the writer of these sketches, was born April 2, 1831. In 1856 he married Caroline M. McKee of Center County, Pa., who died in May of 1858 leaving an infant daughter who died 2 months later. This lady had some advanced education for a farmer's daughter in her times, and was very talented and had the art of gaining friends and was deeply mouned by the Hanawalt connection and all who knew her. George Hanawalt in a second marriage gained the hand of Barbara Replogle, a daughter of Daniel Replogle of near New Enterprise, Bedford County, Pa. She was the thirteenth of a large wealthy farming family. She was also talented, modest, kind, affectionate and pious. She lived in wedlock over 13 years and had 9 children, 8 of whom are living at this date, viz. Daniel R., David Milton, Wm. Cyrus, Nancy Ann, Mary, Susannah Jane, Harriet and Barbara M. Barbara Replogle Hanawalt died in May, 1873, leaving 8 children under 12 years of age, having buried a son Joseph R., eleven months old, and a mournful husband in charge. George Hanawalt in a third marriage united with Lucinda Stutzman, a daughter of Samuel and Barbara Stutzman, farmers and dairy people near Johnstown, Cambria County, Pa., and largely connected to three large families and church connections in that region, viz. Stutsmans, Benshoffs, Knavels. To this union was added nine more children, viz., Samuel E., Katherine E., Harvey M., Henry Lewis, Charles H., an infant son died aged 1 month, John Ross, George Russell, Luella May. Seven of these children are living at this date, Henry Lewis having died December 5th, 1900, aged nearly 19 years."

George Swigart Hanawalt was the oldest of the children [of Elder Joseph Rothrock Hanawalt] and was born April 2, 1831 on the Hanawalt homestead where the three previous generations of American Hanawalts had lived [near McVeytown]. George was of a literary inclination, and was, as far as known, the first of The Brethren sons in the high schools of his day. .... he became a leader among the teachers of Mifflin Co., for 16 years. He farmed in the summers and taught in the winter months as was ususal in that period of time.

When he was twenty-one, he was elected County Auditor of Mifflin County and served six years.

In 1859 and 1860, George Hanawalt was Assistant Principal ... McVeytown Academy ...

George married three times.

First, He married Miss Caroline Matilda McKee of Nittany Hall, Centre Co., Pa., in 1856. She died June 8, 1858 leaving a baby daughter, Carrie Jane, who died at the age of two months. Burial at Spring Run Cemetery.

Second, He married Miss Barbara Replogle, daughter of Daniel Replogle, New Enterprise, Pa. on Feb. 1, 1860. She died May 25, 1873 ...

Third, He married Miss Lucinda Stutzman, daughter of Samuel Stutzman of near Johnstown, Pa. To this union nine children were born - namely, Samuel, Katherine, Harvey, Lewis, who died Dec. 5, 1900 at the Ligonier Valley farm home. Burial at Benshoff Cemetery, Johnstown, Pa., aged 18 years, 9 mos., 7 days. Charlds, infant son, died July 22, 1886, aged 1 mo., 2 days. Ross, Russell and Luella.
George united with the church in June 1858 and was called to the ministry in 1864.

The family moved into the Conemaugh congregation, Johnstown, Pa., in 1879. ...

He was ordained to the eldership on June 10, 1886, at Walnut Grove church, Johnstown, Pa. During this same year, although attached to the people of Johnstown, he decided that for the benefit of his family which had many growing sons, he must make a change to another locality, and he moved onto a large farm in the Ligonier Valley, Westmoreland County, Pa. Here he found some scattered members of the church whom he soon organized into a church which is called Ligonier. A house of worship was built at Waterford, and called "The Boucher House," and his name placed on the front of the church. He also preached at Boliva and Cokesville.

He lived here for about sixteen years when his health began failing him.

After a severe illness in 1902, he was induced to go to California and settled at Lordsburg (La Verne) where his son, Prof. William C. Hanawalt was President of Lordsburg College. Another son, Harvey, had gone to California earlier, with his brother, William C. Hanawalt.

... George made a last visit to the Keystone state ... in 1910. ...

Elder George Hanawalt passed away on June 3, 1913, at age of 82 yrs., 2 mos., 1 da. Burial was in the Lordsburg, Calif., cemetery. A memorial (cenotaph) stands between the headstones of his first and second wives in the Spring Run cemetery in commemoration of his name (see Find-A-Grave memorial: 15011257).
