Edward was the oldest of Lorence Brenner and Jane Nothom's 10 children. He grew up on the family farm in Canton Township, Buffalo County, Wisconsin and attended the Tiffany school, which was located about a half a mile from their home. Ater leaving his parents farm, he went to Durand where he found employment as a carpenter. He worked there for awhile and then moved back to the Canton area and took over management of the Bear Creek Creamery, in which his father was a shareholder. Around this time, he met Clara Zeilinger and they were married on September 6, 1908 in Pepin County, Wisconsin. He later purchased a farm of about 100 acres, that was previously known as the Inscho farm, that was located a mile and half north of his father's place. Two children were born to the couple, a daughter, Annabel Jane, born on August 14, 1909 and a son, Edward Francis on June 12, 1911.
On October 20, 1911, Edward began feeling ill. The doctors diagnosed it as an appendicitis. The ailment was not thought to be serious. The illness hung on for several weeks, with Edward suffering little pain. By November 8, 1911 he had made preparations to see a specialist in Minneapolis. He never made the trip. Edward Brenner died at this home on Sunday morning Novemer 11, 1911 of a ruptured appendix. The young 26 year old left behind a young two year old daughter and a five month old son. Edward is buried in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Lima, Wisconsin.
