Helen Mae Spargo was the second child born to John A. Spargo and Ida Martin Spargo.

Helen, who went by her middle name "Mae", made the best fudge ever, according to her cousin Mary Kelty (nee Betty Rose).

Mae's mother Ida died when Mae was only 8 years old. That same year, 1896, Miss Elizabeth (Lizzie) Cole joined the household as housekeeper. Some 8 years later, Mae's father John married Miss Cole.

In 1909, Mae's younger brother Roger D. Spargo died just before his fifteenth birthday.

In the late 1920's, Mae's stepmother was afflicted with severe rheumatoid arthritis. Mae took loving care of her stepmother until the latter's death in 1938.

Mae cared for her father John A. Spargo until his passing in 1941.

Mae, by all accounts, was a wonderful caregiver, wholly devoted to her family.
