Having grown up on his parents' farm, Charles Leon Johnston served during World War I in the 79th Military Police Company of the U.S. Army. Following his discharge, he became a public school teacher and later was Principal of the Waynesboro High School. By 1930, however, he was the owner of an automobile dealership. Then, on 24 May 1951, Charles became Waynesboro's Postmaster, which position he kept until his retirement on 30 September 1959.
