Brigadier General Sir Charles Vere Gunning, 7th Baronet of Eltham, C.B., C.M.G., was the son of Sir George William Gunning, 6th Baronet, and his wife, Lady Isabella (Chester-Master) Gunning. Married Ethel Finch-Hatton on October 17, 1888 at Weldon, Northamptonshire, England. They had one daughter, Essex Vere Gunning, who married Major Basil Brooke, British Army. He inherited the title upon the death of his brother Sir Frederick Digby Gunning, 6th Baronet, in 1906. He studied at Radley College. After entering the army, he served as a Captain in the Durham Light Infantry (68th Regiment of Foot). Eventually served in South Africa, 1899-1902. Major Sir William was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (C.M.G.) in 1917. He eventually reached the rank of Brigadier General. With no male heir, upon his death in 1950, he was succeeded by a cousin in Alberta, Canada, Sir Robert Charles Gunning, 8th Baronet (find a grave memorial 261958389).
