FINAL SERVICES HELD FOR COUNTY PIONEER MRS. MARY A. BARTON
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Mary A. Barton, Crook county pioneer, at the Episcopal church in Sundance, April 14 (1949). The Rev. Paul Foster of the Church of the Corpus Christi of Newcastle officiated. Mrs. Barton died in the Gillette hospital, April 12, after an illness of about a week. She was 86 at the time of her death. She is survived by three sons, John L. of Omaha, Nebraska, and Verne F. and Meritt N., stockmen of Crook, Weston and Campbell counties. One sister, Mrs. Sarah McGrew of El Monte, California, and one brother, Thomas Nefsy of Moorcroft, survive. Mrs. Barton is also survived by six grandchildren and two great grandchildren...Burial was in Mt. Moriah cemetery at Sundance. Mary Ann Nefsy was born in Wisconsin on April 11, 1863. She was the oldest daughter of Daniel and Ann Nefsy. The Nefsy family came from Wisconsin by wagon train in the early 1880s and located on Inyan Kara Creek in Crook county. On September 29, 1886 in St. Patrick's church at Lead City, Mary Ann Nefsy was united in marriage to George Barton. To this union five sons were born. The Bartons resided at Sundance, Wyoming, where Mr. Barton established the first livery business in Crook county, and was the county's first assessor. In 1897 they homesteaded on Houston Creek, where the family made their home until 1931 when Mrs. Barton moved to Gillette, to live with her son, Louis, and his two children. She lived at Gillette until 1936, when she moved to Newcastle. She remained in Newcastle until she went to live with her son, Meritt, and his wife on the old home ranch in Crook county. She was a charter member of Electa Chapter No. 5 of the Order of Eastern Star at Sundance. Preceding her in death were her eldest son, George, her husband who passed away in 1902, and her son, Louis, in 1936.
