COLUMBIA - Services for Anna Mae Powell Dickson, of 1516 McDuffie Avenue, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at St. Episcopal Church with interment in Palmetto Cemetery.
Visitation is 1-9 tonight at Manigault-Hurley Funeral Home Chapel.
Pallbearers will be the Vestry and Men's Club of St Episcopal Church.
The honorary pallbearers include the honorable Bob Coble former mayor Patton Adams members of City Council Richland/Lexington Airport Commission and Prince Hall Masons of South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Congaree Girl Scout Council, P.O. Box 3676, Columbia 29202 of Capital Improvement Fund of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1300 Pine Street, Columbia 29204.
Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late James and Rebecca Byrum Powell. She attended Allen University and was a graduate of the school of nursing of Waverly Hospital. She was a widow of J. E. Dickson.
She founded the first Girl Scout program for African-American girls in Columbia and was honored by the Congaree Girl Scout Council when she received their 1994 Women of Distinction and the Lifetime Achievement Awards. Very active in the Liberty Hill/St. Anna's Park Community, she organized a senior citizens group at St. Anna's Park where a portion of the park was later named in her honor.
In 1994, she was appointed by the Columbia City Council to the Richland/Lexington Airport Commission. She also worked with the South Carolina Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. Mrs. Dickson was a lifelong member of the democratic party and served as a democratic presidential elector. She was a strong political and social
advocate for her community. For many years, until her death, she served as keeper of the records and books for the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the State of South Carolina. She was a member of three Eastern Star organizations, including Queen Esther Chapter Number One, C.C. Johnson Assembly Number One, Order of the Golden Circle and the Cairo Court Number 125, Daughters of Isis. In addition, she was a member of three bridge clubs the New Century the No Name and the Bid-Rite Clubs.
Mrs Dickson was a lifetime member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. She served as a past diocean president of the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina and was past member of the Altar Guild.
Surviving are two step-grandsons, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
