J. E. Dickson Dies Here; Rites Sunday
James Dickson of 1516 McDuffie Ave died Friday in Providence Hospital. He was a son of the late Joseph and Mattie Douglas Dickson and was born in Society Hill.
Funeral services will be Sunday at 4 p.m. in St. Luke's Episcopal Church conducted by the Rev. William F. O'Neal.
Burial will be in Palmetto Cemetery.
He was a graduate of S.C. State College and taught school in Society Hill for five years. In 1917, he became the agricultural extension agent for Richland County and served in this capacity for 32 years, retiring in 1949. In 1933, he was elected Right Worshipful Grand Secretary of Prince Hall Grand Lodge retiring in 1966. He served in every branch of Masonry and was deputy of the Desert of South Carolina. In 1950, he was the only elected Supreme Council officer at which time he was elected Oriental Guide. He also served as Grand Chancellor of the Supreme Council, 33rd degree, Southern Jurisdiction and as Imperial Chief of the Exalted Past. He organized every temple in the Desert of South Carolina except one, which was reinstated under his auspices.
He was a charter member of the Columbia Alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and was Grand Secretary Emeritus of Prince Hall Grand Lodge of South Carolina.
He was twice married, first to the late Mrs. Marion Goodson Dickson.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Anna Mae Powell Dickson; a son, Herbert Dickson of Santa Monica, Calif.; and a daughter, Mrs. L. J. Mortillaro of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four sisters, Mrs. Gordon Hancock of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Mary Harper of Columbia and Mrs. Juanita Berry and Mrs. Janie Perry of Washington, D.C.; and two brothers, the Rev. J. S. Dickson of Society Hill and John Dickson of Amelia, Va.
