Father Dowd was born in Beaver Dam, Wis., on March 3, 1935, to Ambrose and Eleanor Sholes Dowd. He attended St. Jerome Grade School and Oconomowoc High School, both in Oconomowoc.
After attending Notre Dame University for a year, he completed college studies in philosophy and theology at St. Francis Seminary, Milwaukee. He was ordained to the priesthood May 25, 1963, at St. Raphael Cathedral in Madison.
He served as associate pastor at St. William, Janesville; St. Mary, Portage; and St. Patrick, Janesville. He was pastor at St. Patrick, Doylestown, with the mission of St. Joseph, Rio; St. Francis Xavier, Lake Mills, with the mission of St. Mary Magdalene, Johnson Creek; SS. Anthony and Philip, Highland; St. John the Baptist, Jefferson; Our Lady of the Lake, Green Lake; and St. Joseph, Madison, where he was currently pastor.
He had served as dean of Iowa Deanery; Diocesan Consultor; Procurator of the Diocesan Tribunal; Diocesan Pastoral Council member; and instructor at Beloit Catholic High School.
Survivors of Father Dowd include: his sisters, Helen (Rodney) Maasch, Madison; Sally (Richard) Lyons, Carlsbad, Calif.; sister-in-law Sue Dowd, Oconomowoc; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, December 6, 2002 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 1905 W. Beltline Hwy., in Madison. Bishop William H. Bullock was th main celebrant.
Burial took place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Sun Prairie, WI.
Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2002 at St. Joseph's Church. Visitation was also held on Friday, December 6 2002, at St. Joseph's Church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
