William's parents are William and Barbara Levingood Cunningham.

He was married to Anna Ross (1820-Feb 1896), d/o Henry and Sarah Cook Ross, 25 Apr 1844, in Jackson Township, Darke County, Ohio by John Ketchum, Justice of the Peace.

William S. and Anna are the parents of seven children:
01. Levi F. Cunningham
02. Robert J. Cunningham
03. Nathan L.Cunningham (his 1st wife was Lavinia Hercules and his 2nd was Rachel
Gibson)
04. James Riley Cunningham
05. Josiah Cunningham
06. Joseph Cunningham
07. Sarah M. Cunningham

William enlisted in Greenville, Ohio and was a private in Company G of the 40th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on 18 Aug 1862 during the Civil War. He was discharged with Company F of the 36th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in July 1865. He was wounded during his service, and suffered from those wounds for the rest of his life.
