William enlisted in Greenville, Ohio and was a private in Company G of the 40th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on 18 Aug 1862 during the Civil War. He was discharged with Company F of the 36th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in July 1865. He was wounded during his service, and suffered from those wounds for the rest of his life.
