Son of Joseph and Sarah (Laferty) Adair. Husband of (1) Hannah (?). (2) Rebecca Ross.

Sources indicate that he was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania in 1734 and moved to the Piedomont area of South Carolina between about 1750 and 1755 and settled in the area that became in 1768 the Ninety Sixth District and the area where he lived became Laurens District in 1785.
James was a soldier of the Revolutionary War. He was in the South Carolina Militia and served as wagon master for Col James Williams' regiment during the period before and after the fall of Charlestown.
