Josiah Moore Henry was born in Haywood County, NC, May 4, 1826. His father, Lorenzo Newton Henry, born March 1, 1800, was a native of Hanover County, VA, but who went to York District, SC, with his brother, Malcolm Henry, as a young man.


Both married in York District: Malcolm to Widow Agnes Smith Moore, and Lorenzo to Mrs. Moore's daughter, Mary Melinda Moore. Mrs. Moore's husband was Josiah Moore.


Captain John Henry of Hanover County, VA was the father of Malcolm, Lorenzo and Meige Henry (Meige lost track of). Captain Henry fought in the Revolutionary War with distinction at Cowpens and Kings Mountain. He moved to Haywood County, NC, in 1804 and died about 1835. Malcolm and Lorenzo Henry joined their father in Haywood County sometime after 1804. Lorenzo died in Haywood County in 1868.


The father of Captain John Henry, according to the "Annuals of Haywood County, NC," by Allen (1908), shows that he was probably William Henry of Hanover County, VA, a British Army officer, the son of Alexander and Jean Robertson Henry of Aberdeen, Scotland, who came to America in 1730, with his brother, Patrick, and settled in Hanover County, VA. This Patrick became the rector of St. Patrick's Parish, Hanover County, VA.


Lorenzo Henry married Mary Melinda Moore, and had: Nancy A., married John H. Evans of NC, commander of an artillery company (won marked distinction at battle o French Broad River in Civil War).; Josiah Moore (later); Mary E., married David Byers; Eliza J., married Jermiah Evans (Confederate Army; Margaret M., married Henry Lee; Emily I., married James W. Cooper (Captain, Confederate Army, later prominate lawyer, Murphy, NC); Amanda M., married Albert Keeler (Sevier County, TN); Harriet E., married Robert Moody; John R., died ninth year; Lorenzo H., (farmer); William L. and James R., moved to Texas.


Josiah Moore Henry was educated in Haywood County, residing there until 1855. His diploma from Sand Hill Academy was certified July 22, 1856. He taught school two years i Madison and St. Francis Counties, Missouri; returning to NC; he then taught in Sieverville, TN for a year, leaving to settle on his plantation in Walker County Georgia, January 31, 1858, where he resided until his death in 1903.


On January 1, 1863, he enlisted in Co., F, Fourth Ga. Calvary (which became the 12th GA Cavalry) C.S.A., Col. I. Avery. he was a courier; in commissary department, and participated in several skirmishes. Prior to the war, he was a Lt. Col. of Militia. On April 20, 1858, he married Eliza Dickey of Walker County, daughter of Joshua T. Dickey and Mary Killian, and had: Mary., married John M. Malicoat; John R., Hannah E., and James R., deceased; George D. went to Teas; Rachel., married J.H. Roane of Oklahoma; Randolph, deceased; Beatrice., married John Gordon Lester Myers, Chickamauga, GA; Rex., married Marjorie Fay Porter (born 1892); Burton, deceased; Bishop Marivn, married Julia Alberta Wyatt (born 1887); Thomas T, married Katherine Ann Porter (born 1890).


Josiah Henry was recognized as a man of worth in his community, and a gentleman of education and refinement. He was conservant with the history and resources of North Georgia. he is buried in the Dickey Family Cemetery south of Highpoint, Walker Georgia.
