Jesse's grandfather Hickman Gray came to Texas from Butler County, KY in 1872. settling in Cooke County near Gainsville. Jesse's father was Henry Thomas Gray who married Louisa Bell Daniel in Cooke County in 1876. Louisa was born in Mississippi, the daughter of William Green Daniel and Rebecca Jane Ragan. When Louisa died in 1884 after giving birth to her third child, a daughter Mary Ethel, Henry took his three young children to Hunt County and moved into the household of Louisa's younger married sister, Frances Lucinda Daniel Edgar, who raised Henry's children as her own.
Jesse married Zulu Hasselfield in Hunt County on December 25, 1904. They had one child, a son, Jesse Dewitt Jr. who died at the age of 16.
Jesse's occupation was railroad engineer.
