60, of Auburn died at 2:53 a.m. Friday at his residence.

Born Nov. 30, 1924, in Auburn, he was the son of Maurice and Minnie Duff Charles. He was preceded in death by one brother, Maurice Charles.

Mr. Charles, a self-employed carpenter, was a lifelong resident of Auburn. He was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Surviving are one daughter, Helen Elaine Charles of Girard; one son, Mark Thomas Charles of Auburn; seven sisters, Elizabeth Berrgren of Chicago, Dorothy Stoffel of Springfield, Ruth Miller, Helen Anderson and June Smalley, all of Normal, Katherine Swick of Bloomington and Mary Margaret Ward of Dallas, Tex.; one brother, James Robert Charles of Sherman; two grandchildren; former wife Verdie Sheppard Charles and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Berry Funeral Home, Auburn. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield
