William James "Bill" Baum, 86 of Clive passed away peacefully at home on Monday June 5, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am, Thursday, June 8, 2023, at St. Augustin's Catholic Church. A Visitation will be held from 5pm-7pm, Wednesday, at Iles Dunn's Funeral Home with a Rosary following at 7pm.

Bill was born to Marvin and Leona Baum (Patterson) on December 2, 1936, in Buffalo Center, Iowa.

He was a 1955 graduate of Nevada High School, where he was a tough defensive end. He was accomplished in art, theatre, and several other sports.

He enlisted in the Iowa Air Force National Guard and was honorably discharged with the rank of Tech Sergeant 132D Air Base Squadron in 1959.

He met the love of his love of his life when he picked up his little sister Marva from 1st grade and met her teacher, Marge Heintz. It was love at 1st sight! She also loved his car-a '57 Chevy!!

Marge and Bill were married on July 9, 1960, in Nevada, Iowa. To this union, 4 children were born.

It was important to Bill to share his love of travel with his children. Because of this, a young family with little money travelled all over the United States visiting National Landmarks in a paneled station wagon and a pop-up camper.

Bill started working at Joseph's Jewelry at the age of 21. When he started, there was already a Bill working at Joseph's. Bill Baum was bestowed the new name "Sam." He began taking courses from the American Gem Society and the Gemological Institute of America. He earned his Certified Gemologist designation and became the Manager of Joseph's Merle Hay store in 1959. Twenty years later, he became the CEO of Joseph's. Marge and Bill were able to visit 61 countries during this time and Marge was always his traveling companion. Bill carried the title of CEO until he retired from Joseph's after 46 years in 2004. Bill and Marge enjoyed these travels well into retirement.

After retirement, Bill enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and grand fur babies. Bill and Marge loved visiting friends and family. They never went anywhere without bumping into someone they knew.

His Catholic faith was a vital part of his life. Bill was an active member of Legatus, the Order of Holy Sepulchre, and St. Augustin's Catholic Church.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Leona, and sister Suzanne Auxier.

A special thank you to Dr. Steinmetz for his care of Bill for many years and to Every Step Hospice.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Dowling Catholic High School and Umeri Drake University Alumni Choir.
