OBITUARY from The Muscatine Journal, Muscatine, Iowa, Wednesday, 9 December 1896, page 3 : "John Wilson was born in Indiana, July 21, 1814, and died In Cowley county, Kansas, October 14 1896. He was a great sufferer. For two months he was confined to his bed with erysipelas and dropsy. He, with his father, mother and family, emigrated to Iowa in the fall of 1836, being one of Iowa's first settlers. Moscow, Iowa, Dec. 9, 1896."

Died: - At his home near Eaton, Kansas, on Sunday October 11th, 1896, at 10 o'clock p.m., John Wilson, after a long spell of sickness. Uncle Johnny, as he was best known, was well known by all our citizens being an old landmark, having settled on a farm on Silver Creek near Burden, among the first. A man of remarkable vitality. He remained hale and vigorous up to this sickness which culminated in death.
